At its inception, the Chinese Benevolent Association of Stockton served as the administrative head for family clans and tong associations. It also operated the Chinese language school and maintained the Chinese Cemetery. The building on Lafayette Street was an important gathering spot for the Chinese residents of Stockton. Over the ensuing years, the Chinese community prospered and assimilated into the greater Stockton metropolis. Interest in the Association waned, and the Confucius Church building and the cemetery fell into disrepair. In May of 2009, a new, invigorated Board of Directors was formed. This new Board has undertaken the daunting task of rebuilding the organization and restoring CBA property.
